Meet the Author Behind Herman

Rand Rubin is the author of The Adventures of Herman, A Very Special Parrot—a story about a small bird who feels different, but discovers friendship, kindness, and where he belongs.

Rand was born in Los Angeles and raised in Burbank, California, at a time when kids played outside until dark and neighbors knew each other by name.

From an early age, he worked—first at a car wash, then in a restaurant, and later selling shoes. Those experiences shaped how he understands people: how to listen, how to connect, and how to earn trust.

He later became a trial lawyer and eventually a Superior Court judge. Throughout his career, one lesson stayed constant—people connect to stories that feel honest and real.

That belief in storytelling led him to write The Adventures of Herman.

Herman was inspired by a real-life parrot—unique, full of personality, and deeply loved.

What began as a personal connection became something more: a story for children who feel different, who may struggle to fit in, or who just need a reminder that they belong.

Rand writes with a simple goal: to create stories that are warm, honest, and meaningful for children—and for the parents, grandparents, and families who read with them.

If a child finishes Herman’s story feeling seen, understood, or a little less alone, then the story has done its job.

Personal note:

“Herman’s story is about more than a bird. It’s about kindness, patience, and the quiet way we help each other grow.”
